Audi one-two to cap an exciting Fuji weekend
It was an exciting end to the Japanese leg of the GT Asia Series when Audi claimed a one-two finish at Fuji International Circuit for Round 6 today. Marchy Lee took the car home for a win, one that he led after Jeffrey Lee passed the car to him during the pit-stop. M.Lee was followed home closely by teammate Alex Yoong who took over driving duties from Francis Hideki Onda.
It was a big celebration in the pit as the two Audi R8 LMS Ultra battled in the final laps with Yoong having to fend his position from the fast charging Aston right at the end.
The Aston Martin Vantage V12 GT3 of Craft Racing AMR finished the race in third with Stefan Muecke at the wheel after a well driven first stint by Frank Yu.
The race was interupted by an early Safety Car period when the Lamborghini LP560 GT3 driven by Tunku Hammam and the Audi R8 LMS Ultra driven by Phillip Ma collided as they battled for position into turn one of lap 5. Both drivers rejoined the race but the GTM Ferrari 458 Challenge driven by Naoryu was a casualty, when he avoided a collision with the duo, picked up some debris and ended his race with a high speed rear puncture sending him straight on into the run off.
Keith Vong was also later a casualty a few laps later when he suffered a puncture caused by debris that he caught on the straight leaving the Safety Car on track a little longer.
The Audis benefitted from the melee and a shorter pit-stop to come out ahead of both the McLaren 12C GT3’s and the Aston Martin’s, a position that they maintained all the way to the chequered flag.
In the GTM class, Wayne Shen was vindicated when he claimed the win for Round 6 after he was disqualified from the race yesterday. W.Shen finished the race ahead of good friend Francis Tjia, with whom he battled after the pit stop sessions. In third was Taiyou Iida, who fought hard with Tjia once again but was not able to find a clean way past.
The top three winners also collected points for the AAMC Macau GT Cup Championship.
The GT Asia Series continues with Rounds 7 & 8 at Sepang International Circuit 13-15 September 2013.
