Absolute Racing Adds Three Cars to Growing Audi Cup Grid
- Absolute Racing to field seven cars at Suzuka
- First visit to the world famous Japanese circuit
- Picariello, Gilbert and Cheng aiming top positions
Fuji, June 7th, 2017 – 2017 Audi R8 LMS Cup season resumes this weekend at Suzuka, and Absolute Racing will run seven cars – that’s more than forty per cent of the grid – under seven different team names and different liveries.
Singha Plan-B Motorsport’s Bhurit Bhirombhakdi, Milestone Racing’s Sun Jing Zu and Absolute Racing’s Anthony Liu will line up alongside with Audi R8 LMS Cup regulars MGT Team by Absolute’s Alessio Picariello, OD Racing’s Mitch Gilbert, and FAW-VW Audi Racing Team’s Franky Cheng CongFu and Team Audi Volkswagen Taiwan’s Jeffrey Lee in the second event of the Cup season.
Bhurit, Sun and Liu are no strangers to the team and to the series. It’s returns to the Cup for the trio, who are competing at this season’s Blancpain GT Series Asia, following last year’s occasional appearances. Their arrival will spice up the battle in the AM+ category, where Jeffrey Lee is leading the standings by 27 points.
Picariello had a perfect start to his season, taking two pole-positions, one win and one second place finish in the opening round at Sepang. Current points leader has not raced at Suzuka before but the 23-year old Belgian wants to keep the momentum going. The last year’s first runner up, however, is well known for being that kind of driver who adapts quickly to any car at any track.
CongFu Cheng’s strength has been his consistency but the FAW-VW Audi Racing Team driver will be aiming to find that something extra to get him onto the podium. The Chinese racer now lies fourth in the standings, and arrives in Suzuka with the advantage of having raced at the ‘figure 8’ layout circuit before.
Gilbert has experienced his fair share of bad luck at Sepang but he also showed scintillating speed in his own racetrack, finishing third in the second race in the opening round. The former single seater ace proved more than a match for the Cup regulars, and will be aiming for podium positions this weekend.
Team Director, Ingo Matter said, “It is great to have Sun, Bhurit and Anthony with us this weekend. We’ll have a good combination of experienced Gentleman Drivers and series top runners and I have no doubt that each will be challenging for top class honors or overall wins. Suzuka is a new track for everyone, so it is quite exciting to see how things will go.”
The fast circuit of Suzuka is world famous and rightly so. Loved by drivers, the circuit features a challenging mix of 17 corners, featuring sweeping turns, long straights, hairpin bends and fast chicanes.
