Absolute Racing Resumes Audi Cup Action at Home

  • Absolute Racing races on home soil
  • Mission is to keep and extend series lead
  • Team will run a total of six cars at Shanghai

Shanghai, September 5th, 2017 – The penultimate race weekend of the 2017 Audi R8 LMS Cup takes place next weekend at the Shanghai Audi International Circuit. Absolute Racing will enter six cars for what is going to be the team’s home race in the Cup.

The ultra-modern Shanghai International Circuit – the home of the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix – is also the second home of Absolute Racing in People’s Republic of China. Its long and technical layout, dominated by a 1,17km straight, with long acceleration zones that demand efficient aerodynamics and high top-speed capabilities link mid-speed corners, which require downforce and stability.

With four races to go in the season, three Absolute Racing serviced teams are currently in the top three of the championship.

MGT by Absolute Racing’s Alessio Picariello is leading the overall championship standings with 126 points, a full 47 points ahead of Mitchell Gilbert of OD Racing  (79 points). FAW-VW Audi Racing Team’s Franky Cheng CongFu is third on the leaderboard with 77 points and the Chinese racer knows that two good results on home soil will boost his chances of a top championship finish.

Things are also looking good for the team in the AM+ Class, and AM Class. Audi Volkswagen Taiwan Racing’s Jeffrey Lee is now second in the AM+ Class, and Singha Plan B Motorsport’s Bhurit Bhirombhakdi is leading the AM class.

Back to the team this Cup weekend is Milestone Racing’s Sun Jingzu, a Blancpain GT Series Asia regular and former Cup driver. He will join the AM Class ranks.

Commenting about the weekend ahead, Team Manager Michael Schneider said, “As we are leading the top three in the overall standings with Alessio, Mitch and Franky, and Bhurit Bhirombhakdi is also leading the AM category we have very high expectations on home turf. Of course home races are not always the easiest, but we will do our utmost to keep and hopefully extend the lead of our drivers.”

Meanwhile, teams drivers and fans were informed last week that the sixth season of the Cup will now culminate on the weekend of October 7 and 8 at the same location as originally planned, the Zhejiang International Circuit.
