Absolute Racing ends PCCA season on winning note

SHANGHAI, 5th of November – Absolute Racing-run Team StarChase made a spectacular return to the top step of the podium last weekend at its home track Shanghai International Circuit during an action-packed finale to the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season. Philip Hamprecht won the last race of the season as team-mates Yuan Bo and Tanart Sathienthirakul offered glimpses of their true pace.

Starting from fourth place on the grid in race one, Hamprech had a good start, moving up to third place in the opening lap. However Hamprecht’s aspirations of a podium finish were destroyed on lap 4 when he went too wide on the hairpin trying to defend his third position. The German slipped back a little in some fierce battling and ended the race in fifth.

Further back in the field; his team-mates both showcased their race craft, making up significant places during the first race with Yuan Bo and Tanart closing the top nine in P6 and P9 respectively.

However, the best was saved for last as Hamprecht mastered the race two from the outset by leaping from third to first in the drag down to turn two. The series rookie held his nerve over the 12-lap race, scoring his second win of the season, and setting the fastest lap time in the process.

The weekend’s strong home track results sees the Absolute Racing-run outfit end the challenging season on a high note; with the Team StarChase squad bringing 2017 events to a close placed second overall in the Porsche Dealer Trophy.

In race two Tanart produced another measured performance to improve on his ninth place finish in the first race by two positions. The Thailand driver has finished seventh in the standings in his Carrera Cup Asia rookie season.

Race two proved a tougher challenge for the Team C&D Auto-man, who crossed the finish line in tenth. Yet, and thanks to the strong performance in race one, Yuan Bo secured the third position for Team C&D Auto in the first edition of the Porsche Dealer Trophy.

Team Director Ingo Matter said, “That was the perfect way to finish off this year. I think it’s fair to say we’ve shown everyone just how competitive we are. The whole team has been working together so well this season and this weekend was the true reward for everyone involved. Hopefully our teams can carry this strong performance into winter testing and come back next year with a full championship challenge.”

One last note to our own Shirley Lim, who received, from the hands of six-time Le Mans 24 hours winner Jacky Ickx, the “2017 PCCA Positive Spirit Award” in the Night of Champions ceremony.

The 2018 Porsche Carrera Cup season gets underway at the Shanghai International Circuit on April 14/15 with the introduction of the new 911 GT3 Cup car.
