Absolute Racing joins new F3 Asian series
Absolute Racing is proud to confirm that the team will be on the grid for the inaugural 2018 Formula 3 Asian Championship certified by FIA following the official launch of the series last Friday.
The Sepang, Shanghai and Zhuhai based squad, who have a huge amount of race winning experience in singles seaters, will add this new junior formula to its racing programmes in Audi R8 LMS Cup, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and Blancpain GT Series Asia.
The addition of this championship will bolster the FIA single-seater pyramid in the region, giving the most talented local or overseas junior drivers an ideal next step in their careers.
As a major player in one of the fastest growing sports in Asia, Absolute Racing has been able to take any driver on a journey through the junior formulas to the top level of the sport in the most professional environment.
2017 Audi R8 LMS Cup champion Alessio Picariello revamped his career in 2015 by joining the team. In 2016 Phil Hamprecht moved to Asia to conquer the Formula Masters China Series title that opened the door to a full-time seat in Porsche Carrera Cup Asia with Team StarChase. Recently Formula Masters Asian Series first runner up Daniel Lu has been selected as the 2018 Porsche China Junior.
Built by a well-known chassis maker, the Asian series’ F3 car will comply with the latest FIA safety specifications, including the new Halo device. It will have a six-speed paddle shift gearbox and will be powered by an yet-to-announced single-make 270hp turbo engine.
The inaugural F3 regional Asian championship calendar includes 15 races – three at each of the five rounds – at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit, and China’s Ningbo International Speedway and the Shanghai International Circuit. The season will kick start with an official test on July 9 and 10 in Sepang.
Speaking about the announcement, Team Director Ingo Matter said, “We’re very pleased to be joining F3 Asian Championship, which we see as an incredibly important championship in the development of young drivers not only in the region but also beyond. It is also valuable racing series to add to our current GT racing programmes. As champions in Formula Masters Series, our target now is to compete to win in the F3 Asian series.”
Team Director Fabien Fior added, “Absolute Racing has enjoyed a hugely successful recent history in single seaters in the region. We scooped Formula Masters Series Teams’ and Drivers’ titles in the past years. Last year our drivers won twelve out of eighteen races. We have reasons to be optimistic ahead of this new challenge. We’re looking forward to announcing our driver line-up shortly.”
