Chinese driver Ye Yifei took his second Asian Winter Series victory in as many race weekends, after a flawless drive in a tense third race at the Sepang International Circuit. Absolute Racing’s Ye Yifei picked up two second-place finishes and one win in the Asian Winter Series second event at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit (January 19/20), setting up a tense title decider for next month’s season finale.
It all started in Saturday qualifying sessions which saw China’s Ye Yifei, who kicked off the day with a category record lap time under the 2 minute mark in the single Free Practice morning session, capturing the second on the grid for Race 1 and Race 3, while Eshan Pieris from Sri Lanka posted the ninth fastest time in qualifying one to dramatically improve to fifth in the second qualifying.
The Absolute Racing started its 2019 season in strong form over the weekend (11-12 January) with a race win and a podium finish for the squad’s two Tatuus T-318s in the opening round of the new Asian Winter Series at Thailand’s FIA Grade 1, 4.554km Buriram International Circuit.
Friday morning qualifying sessions saw China’s Ye Yifei qualifying second for Race 1 and Race 3, while Eshan Pieris from Sri Lanka posted the fifth fastest time in both sessions.
The first race of the weekend took place later in the day and wasn’t kind for the Absolute Racing duo. Lining up from second on the grid, Ye went to the front on the opening lap. The Chinese youngster led the first few laps of the race but retired while battling for the lead with a radiator failure.

Indonesia’s Andrew Haryanto has been crowned the 2018 Audi R8 LMS Cup champion to close out a dramatic weekend at the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia.
The ProMax Team driver victories in the last two races of the season secured him the title by just five points from rival Bhurit Bhirombhakdi of Singha Plan-B by Absolute Racing. Third in the final standings was Yasser Shahin.
Heading into the final rounds, Haryanto was 11 points behind Bhirombhakdi. Determined to earn his first Cup title, under the lights of Sepang Circuit, Haryanto took his second victory of the year to close the gap to just two points from Bhirombhakdi, who was third across the line.
On Sunday Haryanto claimed his third win of the season, while Bhirombhakdi was second at the flag. The Indonesian season-best performance not only propelled him to the year-end title, but also earned him a one-of-a-kind production Audi R8 road car.
